The island of Gunkanjima, also known as Hashima Island, was abandoned in 1974 after years of mining. Access is now forbidden, but a Japanese historian has recently managed to return with a truly inspiring set of photos.

Wow! Thanks for these, Mark, they truly do inspire the artistic imagination. I would rather spend a week exploring Gunkanjima Island than a week sunning on the beach in Bermuda. Call me strange. Such haunting, surreal beauty. A few decades and human achievement becomes quite humbled, eh?
